Langford Poll Workers Demand Runoff
"Best Job I Ever Had"
Supporters of Larry Langford have taken the unusual step of demanding a runoff even though their candidate claimed a 50.3% share of the election, obviating the need for such a measure. "I understand that they really want to continue supporting me," said Langford, "but they need to understand that this is totally unnecessary, and that [Donald] Watkins has taken back all the money."

The groundswell for a runoff seems to come from the legions of highly trained poll workers who were recruited to 'get out the vote' for the Langford campaign. These are the same workers that crowded around Langford's campaign headquarters on the morning following the election, requesting more 'volunteer' work to do. That the jobs included voting, which was no longer necessary, was not going to dissuade Langford's ardent supporters.

"I've been trained to fill out ballots," said one Langford vote-envoy. "In order to keep using those skills, I need a runoff. Besides I didn't get paid the first time." Other workers showed similar support for a runoff. "I was given a van and taught where the correct polling places were," said a Langford vote-deliverer. "That is not something that many people know. I would like to continue using that knowledge at $13 per head."

"It's the best job I've ever had," said one western precinct resident. "Working for Langford, keeping his loft and poll headquarters in order was much better than working for the white overlords." Another former Redmont domestic worker, however, had a different opinion. "He's promised to make the public transit system better," she said. "I'll be able to get to the white overlords houses a lot easier now."
